A Little Kochi
Tuesday 1/8
Last night we were on an empty plane, we landed in Kochi ahead of schedule, and our bags came out as we arrived, everything was going great. That is until we started chatting with our host for the night on the drive to his homestay. Great guy and great place, however there was an all India strike to start at midnight that would run for 48 hours. This effects all kinds of things and he was worried that we would not be able to make it to our destination. But, that was a problem for Wednesday.
Due to the coming strike, all the gas stations were absolutely packed and traffic was pretty close to horrendous so we took a gamble and got on the road to the ferry to bypass about 60 minutes of the traffic. If the gamble failed then we would add another 30+ to that 60 minutes. Thankfully, we were the last car on the last ferry for the night which saved us a bunch of time and put us right into Fort Kochi.
In Kochi there was room redemption! Patti scored us a place with two separate bedrooms each with their own toilets and shower head that spewed hot water like there was no tomorrow. The two rooms were in a separate lock off space that had a common area, dining area, and kitchen, pretty sweet. The front porch had some nice chairs and a fish tank built in which the girls liked a lot. We helped save the poor bugs by trapping Tara and Riley in a net.
Kochi is a port city with a brand new container facility and in the old town they have a bit of the the ancient. These are traditional Chinese fishing nets. They are lowered into the water for a few minutes then lifted and the catch is taken just feet away and sold on the spot. I was not super keen on trying any of these particular fish as there was the new port and a rather large refinery of some sort just across the bay. There was also quite a bit of trash up on this shoreline, but that did not stop riley from dipping her toes in the Indian Ocean. We may hop in the water on our last stop where there will be fantastic beaches, and 'winter' weather - we will see if we packed the suits for nothing ;-)
I get a kick out of the telecommunications plant in some of the countries that we visit. All of Kochis boxes seemed to be completely exposed and rather a mess.
At noon we hit the road for Munnar.
