Last Day in Sa Pa - 2

Image
Our weather in Sa Pa moved in and out very rapidly. Colorado has quickly changing weather patterns but this was something else. In the space of 15 minutes we would go from wearing just t-shirts to adding another shirt, a fleece, and a shell, only,to strip back down in the next 15 mins. This set up some dramatic lighting which my skills and camera are unable to capture, but I hope you can get an idea. On our travels today we met a nice retired couple from Grand Junction CO who were just wrapping up a 3 month tour and heading back home. He was born in America, she is Chinese and they have travelled much of Asia on extended excursions. About an hour later at lunch Riley expressed to us - "When I grow up, I want to be retired." We found the most fabulous tasting locally grown almonds at the market our first day here. They are subtly sweet with a hint of cinnamon. Patti ate about half a kilo yesterday and did not suffer any food allergy reactions so we went back for another...

Last Day in Sa Pa - 1

Today we awoke to torrential rains. Did I say that in another post? Well, we had them again this morning. The weather cleared up by the time we headed out the door to descend to a small village called Cat Cat. This place was an interesting combination of the authentic with the make believe. The people were not imported, but the hand-crafted goods were. We watched a silversmith pretend to ply his trade in the creation of jewelry with a torch and a fine tool. As well, a soapstone sculptor work on a piece that could never end up matching the piece that he told us it would. It is funny how all the cheap stuff comes from China, even in Vietnam. Apparently, the government encourages and facilitates the import of cheap Chinese goods into the local villages so that they can be passed of as locally made for a significant markup and benefit to the local economy. Two nights ago we ate at one of the fancy restaurants and spent $600,000 VND so last night were were going to tone it down and ...

Sapa to H'mong Villages

Image
Despite listening to the rain all night we woke up to sunshine and a spectacular view from our room. Patti does her research and gets the best bang for the Dong (remember, 1 Dollar = 20,000 Dong). I was pleasantly surprised to see in the shower this morning a shampoo and body gel dispenser on the wall. The body gel had a very distinct smell. After using it as a cleaning agent all over my body I finally figured it out...Honey Baked Ham! Patti and I now smelled like our Easter best. After breakfast we took a quick walk around town when the streets were still relatively quiet but were filled with bird song which is a continual companion in Sa Pa. Many of the stores hang birdcages outside. That also explains all of the bird sales a the Bac Ha market. Today we hiked from Sa Pa down to The H'mong village. We had a local guide who we called Zoom-Zoom. He said that he got his nickname when his dad was rushing to the hospital with his pregnant mother. After an emergency roadside de...
