Last day of Fethiye
Monday June 13
The mostly leisure portion of our tour ends tomorrow morning when we will go from living high up on an island with 180 degree views in front and more in back to being entombed in a mountain tucked into a room with no windows.
This was the third morning, tomorrow will be the fourth (math!), that Patti and I will wake as victims of the scarcest bedsheeting we have experience yet. We have a bottom sheet for the mattress and a very thin blanket that is one size too small for our bed. Instead of cranking the air conditioning and snuggling like it's January in the Rocky Mtns we are making sure that our room is as warm as possible, no fan, no open windows, no AC for sure. We will see if we can embalm in the upcoming tomb.
Speaking of tombs, on our way to the beach today we visited some Lycian Rock Tombs on the outskirts of Fethiye. These date to the 4th century B.C. and seem to be amazingly well preserved. That they are carved directly into the natural hard rock of this mountain gives them a natural continuity that lends to longevity.
After our tomb raiding expedition we headed over to what is know as the Blue Lagoon and enjoyed some blue Mediterranean water. I failed to get pics of the lagoon at it's bluest as the sun was obscured by some pretty fierce looking clouds.
This is a very popular location for paragliding. They launch from a mountain top 6500 feet off the lagoon and make their way down to just off the beach for a landing. I counted 30 up in the air at once. The ominous clouds never stopped the launches and they were right up there in the thick of it, no thanks ;-). Here we are looking towards the clear end of the sky.
After we had enough beach, which does not take long for this crew, we headed back over the pass to check out old town Fethiye. There was some major road construction which Uncle Google only seemed to partially know about. Tara was my co-pilot as she is diligent to give me very specific instructions on exactly which turn to take, seems like there can be a few options bunched together. We navigated the narrowest streets, with cars parked on both sides, that I had ever driven through, got stuck down alleys that I had to back out of, had to take blind turns onto busy roads. Finally we bailed on this experience got some food to cook for dinner, and a lot of chocolate, and jumped on the ferry.
The sunsets are nice from our back deck.
